Hi, my name is Susan Nelson and this is my 17th year teaching at Gulf Shores High School! I grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and always came to vacation in Gulf Shores. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and live in this area. In 2004, that dream became a reality when I was hired to teach at GSHS. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Science Education. I taught history for two years in Tuscaloosa before becoming a history teacher at GSHS. I taught history from 2004 until 2012. During that time I also coached cheerleading, sponsored SGA, and served as the history department chair. I always loved being in school so over the years I continued to pursue my education. I went on to receive an Educational Specialist degree in Elementary/Secondary Administration and a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. In 2012 I left the classroom and worked as one of 4 Instructional Transformation Specialists hired to oversee the 1:1 Laptop initiative in Baldwin County. I spent the next two years traveling throughout the county training teachers on how to use technology in the classroom. I loved this job but missed the students in the classroom, so in 2014 I came back to Gulf Shores to serve as the Career Academy Coordinator and Cooperative Education instructor. This job allowed me the opportunity to meet wonderful students and business owners in our community. During this time period GSHS was recognized on a state and national level for our innovation in Career Education.

This year I have taken on a new exciting role. I am currently serving as the Gulf Shore Virtual Academy Director. I am excited to now facilitate a program of over 60 students in grades 6-12 who are taking full and blended virtual classes.

I have a wonderful husband named Todd and two fabulous daughters Cali and Eliza. During my spare time I enjoy working at our family store The Chocolate Corner, hanging out with friends, and practicing yoga.
